Mission & Vision Statements were read by Kirsten Robinson to open the meeting
Holiday Havoc
Each member present introduced themselves and told their holiday tradition or what they were looking forward to most from this holiday season
The members played an emoji holiday trivia game
Our Year in Review – we watched a video that highlighted some of our accomplishments from 2024 such as…
3 new team members
2 new coalition members
School Engagement
Conducted presentations on the dangers of vaping and the marketing tactics of Big Tobacco at Bishop Noll Academy, McKinley Elementary School for the 4th – 6th grade, and at East Chicago School Corporation’s nurses, security, and administration.
Administered the Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey in 12 middle and High schools across Lake County
Community Outreach Events
Presentation on the dangers of vaping and Big Tobacco’s Marketing Tactic at the Hobart Public Library
Community Education Event to present the results of the 2024 Point of Sale Retailer Audits where 284 tobacco retailers across Lake County were audited
Participated in the community’s National Night Out in both Hobart and Munster
Employers
Participated in Hard Rock Casino’s Employee Wellness Fair
Presented to Modern Forge the benefits of the Indiana Quitline and referring employees that desire to quit smoking using the portal as well as ways we can support their efforts to create a healthier workspace by helping to strengthen their tobacco grounds policy and supplying them with Quitline resources
Training
We attended the Partner X-change in Brown County and had 2 coalition members to join us at the conference
IV. TFI Update – Advocacy Day at the Statehouse
A. Please see attached save the date flyer (February 12, 2025), talking points, and other resources to prepare for the day
B. Please let us know if you plan to attend. We discussed the possibility of group transportation to the statehouse if needed.
V. Thanking and Educating our Legislators
A. We did a form letter to our legislators thanking them for funding the coalition as well as taking the opportunity the educate them on the need for a $2.00 tax increase and why tobacco is still a problem (see attached talking points)
B. The letter will be emailed to each coalition member, who can add a personal message to the letter before sending it to legislators
C. Coalition members were asked to use the Find My Legislator feature and send the letter to each of their legislators as coalition members
VI. Action Items
A. Email the Thank you letter to legislators
B. Bring someone new to the January coalition meeting (Let’s get recruiting)
C. Make a plan to try to attend Advocacy Day in Indianapolis
D. Enjoy the holiday season!!!
