Tobacco usage in schools remains a public health issue with trends in e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. The Indiana Department of Health reported that more than 50% of middle school students and 75% of high school students who currently use tobacco reported using flavored tobacco products.
Indiana is taking an important step by adding language to an education bill that requires schools to teach students about the dangers of tobacco, e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, according to WRTV. Education plays a critical role in prevention and gives students the knowledge to make informed decisions.
For schools selected to participate in the Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey, this is a pivotal opportunity to gain insight into what is happening in our schools and communities. The data obtained from these surveys inform decision-makers what funding and resources are necessary for prevention education as well as where resources need to be allocated to prevent our youth from becoming addicted to nicotine.
The Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey is a chance to listen to our youth, understand the challenges they face, and act on the information given. There is still work to be done, but progress can be made when schools, families, community organizations, healthcare professionals, and our youth work together.
We encourage the selected schools to participate in the survey! Additionally, the Lake County Tobacco Prevention Coalition is available to provide education, resources, and presentations to your students, faculty, and families.
Let’s help our future leaders lead the charge in being tobacco-free!
