Community Advocates of Northern Indiana (CANI) was proud to partner at the third annual Prenatal Well Women’s Wellness Fair at the Dean & Barbara Community Center. With over 50 vendors coming together, the event welcomed community members from across Lake County, bringing together folks who are expecting mothers, fathers, caregivers, or anyone prioritizing their health.

Prenatal Well Women’s Wellness Fair has come to be a cornerstone event for women’s health resources. Hosted by Otis, and Dr. Maya Dominique, the fair connects the community with many resources available to them and has the mission of closing gaps in access, advocacy, and education for women and their families.

According to a study reported by Fox59, Indiana ranks 10th in the nation of top unhealthiest states, with a score of 76.37 out of 100 based on: disease risk factors and prevalence, substance abuse, lifestyle habits and overall health outlook. The study also found that 184.63 Hoosiers per 100,00 residents die from heart disease, and 10.8% of adults in Indiana are living with diabetes. Our afternoon featured a multitude of resources or activities, including:

  • Free health screenings (oral health, immunizations, STI testing, hearing and more)

  • Free haircuts and braiding

  • Giveaways including strollers, car seats, and more

  • Mental health and wellness resources

  • Direct access to healthcare professionals

  • Food and refreshments

  • Music, entertainment, and activities for the whole family

CANI was proud to provide BMI and Behavioral health screenings for the community and shared information about its Luv Mom Program, which focuses on improving maternal and infant health outcomes by connecting expectant parents with resources, education, and supportive services. The program’s key offerings are free doula support, physical comfort, and guidance before, during and after birth. We aim to help reduce the high infant and maternal mortality rates in Indiana and ensure mothers have the support they need throughout pregnancy and beyond.

CANI wants to sincerely thank Dr. Dominique and Prenatal Well for the opportunity to be a vendor at this year’s Women’s Wellness Fair. We look forward to an even bigger and more successful fourth annual fair.

CANI’s mission is to empower communities through education, advocacy, and resources by collaborating with partners to promote healthier outcomes. In route to do that, CANI welcomes opportunities to bring our services to your job or community events!
