Dear Editor,
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Chances are you or someone you know has been affected by this terrible disease. According to the CDC, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States.
Current smokers who have been smoking for more than 10 yearshave approximately a 10% higher risk of breast cancer than women who have neversmoked.
Quitting smoking, or never starting, is one way to limityour risk factors for developing breast cancer.
Early detection is key. It is suggested women aged 40-45begin annual screening. You know your own body. If you notice a change in your breasts, please contact your physician. This disease is much more treatable if found early.
